How can we deal with our health and economic crises as individuals?

Retake control by approaching the world with a loving attitude.

I felt overwhelmed much of this week. When my six-year-old said “no” the 145th time this morning, I snapped. “Then this is mine!” I said, grabbing my son’s plush dolphin. I couldn’t think of a more appropriate punishment.

I cuddled with my son’s toy for a few seconds, and then the absurdity of my reaction brought clarity. We are in a crisis. And every spice, cleaning supply, and pot lies out on my kitchen counter, making my home a mess. But my family is doing well. My youngest son, Reuben, learns about the COVID-19 virus from his smiling preschool teacher through an iPad. And my eldest son, Devin, coaches my six-year-old, Rayden, on how to cook French toast. I realized we have space for love—and that emotional giving helps us retake control of our situation.

Especially if you’re feeling stressed and cramped, now is the time to take energy by reaching out. You will feel more solidly centered—and society needs your leadership.

The current crisis at my house.

How can we bring such leadership to life?

  1. If you’re fighting business emergencies, consider the socially responsible solutions to your problems. Remember, 40% of Americans have less than $400 in emergency cash reserve. Consider approaches that preserve your business while also benefiting others. The actions you take now can become meaningful, value-delivering relationships later.
  2. Reach out to those at high risk of the virus itself or its financial consequences. Fear attacks the lonely, and it takes just a few minutes to deliver companionship by phone.
  3. Donate blood. As community drives have been cancelled, the American Red Cross is begging for critical replacements. Find out how, here

And pass this message on. There will be a time for a strategic business response to our recession. But now is the time to stabilize—and position yourself as a leader. As #JimShulman, the source of several ideas here said: steal, borrow, and build on what’s published here  as you wish.
