How should you handle a new social responsibility professional in your office?

My son knows how to handle new situations. Four-year old Reuben tightly grasps his lunch box, ready for his first day eating at school. The twinkle in his eye is the size of a peach. Reuben’s going to do things his way.

I don’t know exactly what will happen. Maybe a grape will fly through the air behind the teacher’s back. Or perhaps a squeal of laughter will peel out as chocolate milk bubbles out of Reuben’s nose.

Whatever happens, lunch will receive a shot of Reuben’s unique personality. And, I smile when I muse on that consistency. Reuben will always be the little boy I love.

So, what do you do with the new social responsibility professional in your office? A friend estimates how much raise everyone could receive if the new employee’s fired. That calculation is a waste of the technology in your office.

Instead, pull the social responsibility professional aside. Help them understand how you do things. Describe the twinkle with which you inspire suppliers and explain how you blow chocolate milk bubbles through your nose to entertain clients.

Only with time will a new employee develop the insight to seamlessly collaborate. But the first step in creating coherent, conscious tools and strategies in your organization is showing leadership and coming together.

When you first met your social responsibility colleagues, did you show leadership or mistrust? Would you do the same today?
