Why should you care about corporate social responsibility (CSR)?

A friend described the connection with her 100-year-old grandmother who passed away last week: “Every year, she wrote me a letter about Wisconsin’s first robin of spring.”

I sobbed when I read that tribute. Just like when my parents passed away a few years ago, I felt disoriented. My parents hadn’t told me what to do for years before they passed, yet their existence made me feel confident. Home existed.

I had to redefine my home. I still have problems and feel confused. But I find direction by embracing my family and purpose: to help create a society in which I want my children to grow up.

My Home.

What home supports you in crisis?

If we sat together over a cup of coffee, perhaps you’d say, “You know, Rod, parts of my life are going poorly. I have issues with my marriage.” Or my finances. Or my child is sick.

Does your work support you with such problems? I don’t mean, does work give you a place to hide? I mean, does work give you a sense of pride in what you deliver society? So that when you fall down, you have a reason to get back up, dust yourself off, and move forward.

If work does not support you, then transform it. Embrace a socially responsible purpose. Not every tactical business decision aligns with a socially responsible purpose, yet a socially responsible strategy provides support no amount of money ever can.

Creating an end-to-end socially responsible enterprise requires new insights, tools, and greater collaboration. Yet you can find yourself more engaged in your work, energized, and even healthier. And with a business that returns greater profit.

What stands in the way of embracing your responsibility to society?
