DESIRE FOR A RETURN TO
“ORIGINAL SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY”

guest article

Dr. Wallace’s article, Desire for a Return to Original Social Responsibility, is published in the peer-reviewed Corporate Social Responsibility and Social Ethics Blog.

Is corporate social responsibility (CSR) businesspeople greenwashing their guilty souls? Or is CSR a path by which business can have meaningful social impact?

Companies have failed to deliver on their “original” social responsibility (i.e., the fundamental social needs they were created to fulfill.) Delivering such core value today requires a toolbox that combines actions we typically view as for-profit with those we think of as socially responsible. In contrast, a fractured approach with business people entering the community from time to time to “do random good” will continue to break down and fail.

SAVING OUR SEABIRDS

book

Dr. Rod Wallace is featured in Saving Our Seabirds: Helping Our At-Risk and Endangered Species, by Lynn Matsuoka.

An illustrated book featured at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

In the book, Rod provides an essay about how American society is currently drowning in potential. With digital technology, we have the potential to solve any problem. We have amazing potential. Too frequently, however, we are drowning in that potential. Technology doesn’t solve problems, people solve problems, and we solve them most effectively when we work together.

The book is gorgeous and 15% of each sale is donated to Audobon’s Project Puffin, so buy one today!

Drowning in Potential: How American Society Can Survive Digital Technology
Digital technology strengthens our voices, but at what price? Social media draws us into pitched battles on high-profile issues such as trans bathrooms and the right to wedding cakes. In contrast, when we share a goal, we invite aligned, not opposing, efforts to improve society. This doesn’t mean that the fight for equal rights is unimportant, but that we should find common ground where we can.
